Improving Petty Character Chat: Memory and a Story That Continues

How Petty is refining long-term character memory and making replies, speaker bubbles, and suggested responses feel more natural.

By Hyunjoong Kim

When a character treats yesterday's conversation as something entirely new, the feeling of getting closer can fade. Petty is working toward conversations that carry your shared story forward, beyond a single enjoyable reply.

Memory is at the center of that direction. We also refined replies, speaker bubbles, and the way scenes continue.

A shared story that grows with the conversation

The things worth remembering are often small: something you like, an event you experienced together, or a promise you wanted to return to. These details help a relationship feel continuous.

Petty draws on recent conversation alongside separately accumulated memories. We are refining long-term memory so important details can remain useful as conversations grow longer.

The goal is not to repeat old messages. It is a character that naturally brings up a preference in a later scene or responds in light of a shared experience.

Both fresh test conversations reused an earlier fact. They also kept a brief “yes” in the current scene. These observations do not yet establish that the same memories persist across much longer conversations or a return visit days later; that needs further checking.

Memory works better with a natural conversation

Remembering a detail is not enough if speakers become confusing or the story decides your actions for you. We refined several parts of the conversation alongside memory:

  • Richer scenes: The long-reply setting gave single-character replies more room for scene details.
  • Clearer speakers: Supporting characters such as a guard received separate bubbles, and group scenes were adjusted so characters speak when needed.
  • Your next move stays yours: Brief answers should not invent your movement or emotions. Tests recorded fewer instances of taking over player actions.
  • Different reply suggestions: A short line, an action, or an inner thought offers different ways to continue.

A relationship you can return to

Petty aims for a relationship that continues when you return. We want to check whether long-term memories appear naturally when needed and whether details stay associated with the right characters in group stories.

Richer group scenes and endings that invite a response still need work. Rather than treating a small test as a complete solution, we will look for improvements that hold up in longer conversations.
